A group of children from Year 5 and 6 have represented the school at schools cricket tournaments. The matches took place this week at Brighton and Hove cricket club and St Peters cricket club. Our team did really well on both occasions and of course were excellent ambassadors for the school. Mr Brazil who is a qualified cricket coach, accompanied the children and also helped prepare the children for the tournament.

SATs Done!

Year 6 have worked really hard this week. They have completed their end of key stage 2 SATs tests and can now get back to their usual learning routines. We have all been so impressed with their mature attitude when taking the tests and their determination to do their very best. Well done year 6 you have been brilliant! As a treat Year 6 were invited to spend the morning at ‘Jamies Italian’ in Black Lion Street to make pasta and focaccia. I wanted to go too but I had to stay behind and write the Friday News!

Queens Diamond Jubilee

As you know Mrs Denyer has managed to have Boyces Street closed for our Queen’s jubilee street party on Friday 1st June. Mrs Denyer and Jo from the PTA have also met with the owners of Chocckywockydodah and the Coal Shed securing their involvement in the street party. Mrs Denyer is still asking for talented volunteers who can juggle, stilt walk, perform magic tricks or have any other special talents to share them with us at the street party. She is also asking if there is anyone who can perform live music during the afternoon. So if you are in a band and can join us for the afternoon please let us know. A letter and invitation to the street party should arrive home on Monday. The street party takes place from 2.00 pm till 4.00pm. It will of course be lots of fun so, do come along.

Class Photos

The school photographer will be in school on Thursday 24th May to take whole class photos of each year group for you to purchase.

Milk Bottle Tops

Please could you save your milk bottle tops and hand them in at the school office. Mr Daly is collecting them for a charitable cause. The target is 50,000. No pressure then!

Children’s Parade

Well it didn’t rain thank goodness! We all enjoyed the children’s parade and we looked amazing despite the dull day. The samba band added to the fun with brilliant rhythms. Thank you to the samba band, Mr Brazil for walking backwards all the way, to everyone who joined us on the day and to those who helped create the giant sieve and all that went with it. It was worth all the hard work . Well done everyone!

Violin Performance

Our violinists performed in assembly on Tuesday. It was apparent how much they practise by the brilliant performance they put on for us. This was also an opportunity for children to consider if they would like to learn the violin. Ask at the office if you are interested.

Albion in the Community

We were rather let down by the Albion’s adopt a player scheme as we only had a couple of visits from only one of the players. So to say sorry children from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 joined in with a variety of activities led by the Albion in the community team.

Please Help

Please can you help your child by ensuring they have a named PE bag to keep their named PE kit in. The PE bag should hang on their peg. You can also help your child by ensuring you check lost property regularly, take home wellingtons and other bits and bobs that come in to school. The cloakroom areas often look extremely untidy. The children are encouraged to keep their things organised and tidy and it helps them if their things are named and they have bags etc that can hang on their pegs for PE kits etc. Please could you also take lunchboxes home daily. I often have to throw lunch boxes away as they are full of old mouldy food. Not a job I enjoy. Please make sure your child has a proper named, clean lunchbox rather than carrier bags. Thank you.

Class Photos

The school photographer will be in school on Thursday 24th May to take whole class photos of each year group for you to purchase.

Queens Diamond Jubilee

Mrs Denyer has managed to have Boyces Street closed for our Queen’s jubilee street party on Friday 1st June. The street party takes place from 2.00 pm till 4.00pm.It will of course be lots of fun so do come along.

No Keyboard Lessons

There will be no keyboard lessons on Monday. On Monday 28th May there will be recruitment meeting for parents who have children (years 3, 4 and 5) interested in learning the keyboard in September. The meeting is in the school library at 8.40 am.

On-Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Year 2 with 1 late mark and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 3 and Year 4 with 3 late marks each. Well done to all three classes for being so exceptionally punctual.

Congratulations to..

Callum in year 3, the youngest member of Sussex under 9’s chess team who came second in a national championship and winner of the under 8 section of the county mega-final. Well done Callum

Summer Half Term Break

We finish for the summer half term break on Friday 1st June and return to school on Monday 11th June.

The children’s parade takes place tomorrow. Do join us but please dress up in a blue and white stripy shirt (or plain blue), jeans and green face please remember to bring your blue hands and paper hats. Our poem is the Jumblies by Edward Lear. So if you don’t know it read it and then everything will fall into place. Our number is 47 and you will find us in Pelham Street car park. The parade starts at 10.30. Thank you everyone who helped prepare for the parade.

May Day Morris Men

The Morris dancers joined us on Tuesday for a dance or two to celebrate May Day. You can watch them dancing on our website.

Fun Day at Woods Mill

Nursery and Reception children enjoyed a day at Woods Mill nature reserve. Despite the rain they had a great time. In fact I think the rain added to the fun as it ensured there was plenty of mud to slither and slide in.

Tea and Cake for Year 2

Year 2 parents and carers joined the year 2 team and children for an afternoon of activities. The aim of the afternoon was to provide the adults with the opportunity to experience the collaborative activities the children take part in during the school day. Also it was a nice opportunity for a chat, a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Thank you so much to all those parents who came along. It was great fun!

Garden Developments

Have you seen our amazing raised beds which are being built in the front playground! We are planning to continue developing the front playground garden. We have been very fortunate to have a very talented and amazing group of volunteers helping with these developments. Mr Daly and Mrs Purdy have been very busy and involved. Thank you Mr Daly and Mrs Purdy your hard work is greatly appreciated. We are however especially grateful to Paley

O’Connor a parent volunteer who led the project. Paley organised a group of helpers via The Food Partnership. They gave up their free time to help build the raised beds. Paley helped source the sleepers and free compost. So thank you everyone for all that you have done and a special Friday News thank you to Paley.

On-Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Year 1 with 1 late mark and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 3 and Year 5 with 3 late marks each. Well done to all three classes for being so exceptionally punctual.

Bikeability Training

Bikeability training is available in the summer holidays. Level 1 training takes place on Monday 23rd July and level 2 Tuesday 24th July at 10.00 am to 12.00am. Children must bring their own bikes and helmets. If you are interested please let Mrs Karlynn Layzell know by the end of June. You may leave a message for her at the office.

Lost

Harry in Year 1 has lost his coat. It is a khaki green trespass coat with a fur trim hood. Please inform the office if you find it.

Lily Belle in Year 3 can’t find her violin. It was last seen in the Family room so it’s likely someone has picked it up by mistake. It is in a maroon carry case with black straps. Her named practice sheet should be in the case. Please check at home and return to the office if you find it.

May Day Holiday

School is closed on Monday 7th May for the May Day bank holiday.

We are still collecting donations for sports relief so if you wish to donate please leave your donation at the office. Partnership Schools Football Tournament

Pirates, Tinkerbell and Peter Pan

We’ve all had fun today dressing up as book characters. The children came in a variety of excellent costumes. Some were a bit hot by the end of the day in their furry costumes. The staff theme was Peter Pan. We had lots of pirates and Mr Smart enjoyed dressing up as Tinkerbell. I’ve been rather pleased with my outfit as Peter Pan. Green is obviously my colour! Mr Brazil has especially enjoyed the day as he had a head full of hair!

Cool! A 60s Festival

Years 5 and 6 had a groovy afternoon at their 60’s festival in the style of Woodstock. They prepared lots of delicious food and made t shirts and various other items to sell at the festival. They got into the 60s groove by dressing up in psychedelic clothes and saying ‘peace man’ and holding up two fingers, in the appropriate way, obviously. Well done years 5 and 6 I know how hard you have worked to make sure your festival was a success. Thanks to all the parents too who have helped with preparations and lending their clothes to the children. You’re all just so groovy!

Family SEAL Group

Parents and children attending our Family SEAL group on Thursday afternoons are having fun and enjoying the opportunity to talk about their experiences as parents and working on activities with their child. The group is a great place to chat through issues and gain support as a parent. More groups will run in the future so do look out for the next group in the Friday News.

Preston Manor Experience of Life Long Ago

Year 3 enjoyed their experience this week of working as servants and maids at Preston Manor. They learnt the different cleaning methods and cooking techniques from the past. They found out firsthand what life was like living and working in a grand house and just how strict the working conditions were long ago.

Let’s Dance

Year 3 will be performing at the Dome for the Brighton and Hove Schools dance festival. Their dance performance is the evening of 22nd March.

PTA News

On- Time Teds

This week’s Key Stage 1 winners are Year 2 with 1 late mark and in Key Stage 2 the winners are Year 5 with only 2 late marks. Well done to both classes for being so very punctual. I made a mistake in last week’s Friday News. I reported that year 3 and 4 won the On-Time Teds when in actual fact it was Year s 3 and 5. Please accept my apologies Year 5. Sorry.

Easter Break

We finish for the Easter break on Friday 30th March and return to school on Tuesday 17th April.
